Why Is an Element Hidden in Revit?
The complete 16-point diagnosis checklist. Learn why model geometry, tags, and families disappear across active views — and how to resolve each cause systematically.
Autodesk Revit does not use a single “Visible: True/False” flag. An element’s visibility is evaluated dynamically at runtime by a hierarchical pipeline comprising view graphic overrides, spatial bounding boxes, worksharing permissions, temporal phasing, and governing view templates. When an element is missing, it is often suppressed by multiple overlapping criteria simultaneously.
Manually Hidden Element (Hide in View → Elements)
The element was manually hidden by an individual user using the right-click menu or the 'EH' keyboard shortcut.
How to Verify Manually
Click the lightbulb icon in the View Control Bar ('Reveal Hidden Elements'). In the magenta mode, hidden elements appear in dark magenta.
How to Resolve
Select the magenta element, right-click, and select 'Unhide in View → Elements' (or press EU).
Category Visibility Disabled in Visibility/Graphics (VG)
The entire model or annotation category (e.g. Doors, Structural Framing, Air Terminals) is turned off for this view.
How to Verify Manually
Open Visibility/Graphics (press VG or VV). Locate the model or annotation category and check whether its visibility box is unchecked.
How to Resolve
Re-check the category box. Note: If a View Template is assigned, you must edit this inside the controlling template or detach the template.
Active View Filter Hiding the Element or Setting Invisible Lines
A view filter with rule-based criteria matches the element's parameters and has its Visibility unchecked or Projection Lines set to 'Invisible'.
How to Verify Manually
In Visibility/Graphics (VG), switch to the 'Filters' tab. Review active filters and check which rules apply to your element's parameters.
How to Resolve
Uncheck the filter override or change its criteria. View filters take precedence over default category settings.
Element Lies Outside the View Range (Cut Plane / View Depth)
On plan views, the element lies above the Top plane, below the View Depth, or is not intersected by the Cut Plane according to category display rules.
How to Verify Manually
In View Properties, click 'Edit' next to View Range. Compare the element's elevation and bounding box with the Top, Cut Plane, Bottom, and View Depth offsets.
How to Resolve
Adjust the Cut Plane or View Depth offset to encompass the element's bounding box. For floor-hosted families, verify the Level reference.
Clipped by an Active 3D Section Box
On 3D views, an active Section Box cutaway plane is positioned inside or past the element, hiding it from the scene.
How to Verify Manually
In 3D View Properties, check if 'Section Box' is enabled. Make the Section Box visible in VG to inspect its bounding planes.
How to Resolve
Stretch the Section Box control grips outward or temporarily disable the Section Box in View Properties.
Workset Visibility Is Turned Off in the View
In workshared central models, the workset to which the element belongs is set to 'Hide' in this view or globally in Workset Settings.
How to Verify Manually
Open VG (press VV) and navigate to the 'Worksets' tab. Verify if the element's assigned workset is set to 'Hide' or 'Use Global Setting'.
How to Resolve
Change the workset visibility in the view to 'Show'. Ensure modelers didn't place the element on the wrong disciplinary workset.
Phase or Phase Filter Excludes the Element
The element was created in a different phase (e.g., 'Existing') or demolished, and the view's Phase Filter is set to hide that condition.
How to Verify Manually
Select an adjacent visible element and check its 'Phase Created' and 'Phase Demolished'. Compare with the view's 'Phase' and 'Phase Filter' properties.
How to Resolve
Adjust the element's creation phase or change the view's Phase Filter to 'Show All' or 'Show Previous + New'.
Element Belongs to a Non-Primary Design Option
The element is assigned to a secondary Design Option, and the view is set to display the 'Primary Option' or a different designated option.
How to Verify Manually
Open VG, switch to the 'Design Options' tab. Check which option is assigned for each Option Set in this view.
How to Resolve
In VG → Design Options, switch the view display from 'Automatic' to the specific secondary option containing the element.
Element Outside Active Crop Region or Model Extents
The element's geometry falls outside the model crop polygon, and 'Crop View' is checked in View Properties.
How to Verify Manually
Check 'Crop Region Visible' in View Properties. Review whether the boundary rectangle or polygon clips the element's location.
How to Resolve
Adjust the crop boundary handles or uncheck 'Crop View' to verify the element is present.
Annotation Falls Outside the Annotation Crop Boundary
Tags, text notes, and dimensions disappear when the secondary dashed Annotation Crop line is tighter than the text boundary.
How to Verify Manually
Enable 'Annotation Crop' in View Properties and expand the dashed outer boundary line beyond the solid model crop box.
How to Resolve
Drag the outer dashed annotation boundary grips outward to include the tag or dimension.
Family Detail Level Display Settings (Coarse / Medium / Fine)
Some families are specifically configured in Family Editor to be invisible at Coarse or Medium detail levels (e.g. detailed plumbing fixtures or door swings).
How to Verify Manually
Change the View Control Bar detail level from Coarse to Medium or Fine and observe if the element renders.
How to Resolve
If the element must show at Coarse level, edit the family and check 'Coarse' under Visibility/Graphics Overrides in Family Editor.
Active Temporary Hide / Isolate Session
The view has an active temporary isolation session (indicated by a cyan border around the drawing canvas), hiding unselected elements.
How to Verify Manually
Look for a cyan border around the canvas or check the sunglasses icon in the bottom View Control Bar.
How to Resolve
Click the sunglasses icon and select 'Reset Temporary Hide/Isolate' (shortcut: HR).
Element Has Graphic Overrides with 'Invisible Lines'
An individual element has an element-specific graphic override applied via 'Override Graphics in View → By Element', setting lines to Invisible or transparent.
How to Verify Manually
Select where visible, right-click, select 'Override Graphics in View → By Element', and check line projection styles.
How to Resolve
Click 'Reset' inside the Override Graphics in View dialog to restore standard category line weights and patterns.
View-Specific 2D Element Placed in a Different View
Detail items, 2D lines, insulation, and text annotations are strictly 2D view-specific. They cannot appear on any other view by Revit's core architecture.
How to Verify Manually
Check the category of the element. If it is a Detail Item, Model Group with detail lines, or Text Note, it only exists on its host view.
How to Resolve
Copy and paste the detail item using 'Paste Aligned to Current View' onto the target drawing.
Revit Link Overrides (By Host View vs By Linked View)
Elements inside linked models (.rvt) follow linked view overrides or host view VG settings that may turn off consultant categories or worksets.
How to Verify Manually
Open VG, click the 'Revit Links' tab, click 'By Host View' next to the link instance, and check 'Categories' and 'Worksets'.
How to Resolve
Ensure the linked model's discipline categories and internal worksets are set to Show, or switch the link display to 'By Linked View'.
View Template Locks Override Manual Edits
A corporate View Template is assigned to the view. Any manual changes you make to VG, Filters, or View Range are immediately grayed out or reverted.
How to Verify Manually
Check 'View Template' in View Properties. If a template name is present, its checked parameters control the view exclusively.
How to Resolve
Either edit the View Template itself (which updates all views using it), or temporarily set the assigned template to '<None>' to isolate the issue.
