Revit paste error "Selection is invisible in this view": why pasted elements disappear

Why Revit refuses to paste, or pastes elements you cannot see, and the five settings in the target view that cause it.

Revit warning
Selection is invisible in this view.
Wording often reported by users
The selection can't be pasted because it is not visible in this view.
Quick answer

What it means: Revit pasted, or tried to paste, the elements into a place the target view does not display: outside its crop or annotation crop, outside its view range, on a hidden category or workset, or into a view type that cannot show them.

Fastest fix: expand the warning to read the reason. Then temporarily turn off Crop Region and Annotation Crop in the target view and paste again. For model elements copied between levels, use Paste > Aligned to Selected Levels instead of Ctrl+V.

01Crop Region

Pasted outside the crop region or the annotation crop

Text, tags, detail lines and other view-specific elements keep their relative position when pasted. If that position falls outside the target view's crop region or annotation crop, Revit reports that the selection is invisible. This is the most common case when copying a note or detail between plans with different crops.

Fix

In the target view turn off Crop Region and Annotation Crop (Properties or the View Control Bar), paste, move the elements where you need them, then turn cropping back on. Alternatively widen the annotation crop offsets with Edit Crop.

Quick Check

The warning appears only with annotations or details = crop or annotation crop is the first suspect.

02View Range

Model elements land outside the target view range

Paste Aligned to Same Place keeps the original elevation. Elements copied from Level 3 and pasted into a Level 1 plan sit above its Top plane and are not drawn. Ctrl+V into a plan places elements on that view's level, but families with large offsets can still end up above the cut plane or below View Depth.

Fix

Use Modify > Paste > Aligned to Selected Levels and choose the target level. If the elements are already pasted, check their level and offset in Properties against the plan's View Range.

Quick Check

Elements visible in a section but not in the plan after a paste = view range, not visibility settings.

03Visibility/Graphics

The category or a filter is hidden in the target view

If the target view hides the pasted category, through Visibility/Graphics, a view template or a view filter with Visibility unchecked, the elements are created but not drawn. Revit warns because you just added elements you cannot see.

Fix

Open Visibility/Graphics in the target view and check the category and the Filters tab. If a template controls V/G, edit the template or paste into a view without it.

Quick Check

Reveal Hidden Elements (the light bulb) shows the pasted elements in magenta when a category or filter hides them.

04Worksets

Pasted into an active workset hidden in this view

In a workshared model pasted elements go to the active workset, not the workset of the originals. If the active workset is hidden in the target view, or has Visible in all views turned off, the pasted elements are invisible.

Fix

Check the active workset on the Status Bar before pasting. Move the pasted elements to the right workset with the Workset parameter in Properties, or switch the workset on in Visibility/Graphics > Worksets.

Quick Check

A workset named like a link or a consultant's model being active is a frequent source of this problem.

05View Type

The target view type cannot show the elements

Some elements can only be pasted into certain views. Revit reports related errors such as "[Rooms] can only be pasted in Plan or Ceiling Plan views.", "Can't paste view specific elements into perspective view." or "Can't paste because no Work Plane is defined in the View." Pasting walls into an elevation or section fails for the same reason.

Fix

Paste into a plan, ceiling plan or 3D view instead. For work-plane-based families, set a work plane in the target view first (Architecture > Work Plane > Set).

Quick Check

The message names the view type or the work plane = paste into a different view, nothing is hidden.

The pasted elements exist but are hidden by something less obvious, such as a phase filter or a design option? The 16-point Revit visibility checklist covers every setting that can hide them, and the view range guide explains plane order in plans and ceiling plans.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Revit say 'Selection is invisible in this view' when I paste?

The pasted elements would be outside what the target view displays: beyond the crop or annotation crop, outside the view range, on a hidden category or workset, or in a view type that cannot show them. Expand the warning to see which reason applies.

How do I paste text into another Revit view without this error?

Turn off Crop Region and Annotation Crop in the target view, paste with Ctrl+V, move the text into place and turn cropping back on. Text keeps its relative position from the source view, so a different crop is the usual cause.

Are the elements pasted anyway?

It depends on the reason. For crop and visibility settings the elements are usually created but not drawn, and they stay selected right after the paste, so you can move or delete them. For view type and work plane errors nothing is pasted.

What is the difference between Ctrl+V and Paste Aligned?

Ctrl+V lets you place the elements by clicking in the current view. Paste Aligned to Same Place, to Current View, to Selected Levels or to Selected Views keeps the original coordinates or maps them to chosen levels and views. Aligned to Same Place keeps the original elevation, which often puts elements outside the target plan's view range.
